Soccer fans, circle June 10th in your diary; Los Angeles auction house Julien’s is hosting a sale of sought-after soccer memorabilia, including jerseys, trophies, and balls linked to some of the finest talents to ever play the game professionally.
This represents a unique opportunity for soccer fans who are interested in acquiring memorabilia dating from the inaugural World Cup tournament in 1930, right up to the modern day.
With a plentiful supply of match-worn jerseys by some of the greatest players ever to set foot on a pitch, this auction is a treasure trove of items any soccer fan would be proud to display in their home.
The dream for every player
The zenith of any player’s career is to represent their country at the highest level, and there is no shortage of World Cup memorabilia going under the hammer.
The first World Cup took place in Uruguay 87 years ago, with the hosts beating Argentina 4-2 in the final. Among the lots in this incredible auction is a magnificent 1930 World Cup original poster, an item that will only increase in value. Also related to the first World Cup is a silver runners-up medal that was presented to Argentina’s Pedro Suarez.
A medal to marvel at
The next time Uruguay won the World Cup was 20 years later, at the 1950 tournament in Brazil, beating the hosts 2-1 in the final. There is a winner’s medal from that tournament going under the hammer; the medal was presented to Roque Maspoli, the Uruguayan goalkeeper who, despite letting in a goal, helped his country to their second World Cup. He would later go on to coach the national team in the 1980s and 1990s. He is a true legend of the sport in Uruguay, and on June 10th, bidders will have the opportunity to own his winner’s medal.
The greatest players of all time
Pele is regarded by many as the best soccer player of all-time. The legendary Brazilian was just 17 when he inspired Brazil to World Cup glory in 1958, while further World Cup victories arrived in 1962 and 1970. His footballing wizardry stunned audiences around the world as soccer became more widely televised, cementing him as the first global superstar of the sport. Julien’s are auctioning off a number of jerseys and commemorative footballs signed by Pele himself. Any piece linked to soccer’s first superstar will only increase in value, and would make a great purchase.
One of the more fun items up for grabs is a jersey that Pele wore during the filming of the classic movie, Escape To Victory.
Diego Maradona is a footballing great with legitimate claims to the “best of all-time” label, and there are match-worn jerseys and football boots owned by the Argentina icon available to the highest bidder.
Of the modern crop of players, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have stood head and shoulders above the rest for the last decade. Both players feature strongly in the auction, with several match-worn and signed jerseys up for sale.
The man with two motherlands
Perhaps the most fascinating piece going under the hammer relates to Luis Monti, who played in two World Cup finals for two different nations. Monti represented Argentina in the first World Cup final, before playing for Italy when they won the trophy four years later.
In 1954, a replica of the Jules Rimet World Cup trophy was presented to Monti in acknowledgement of his achievement, and that wonderful trophy has made its way into this auction. The individuality of this piece makes it a smart investment for whoever lands the highest bid on June 10th.
Star names right the way through
The amount of top names represented in this auction must be seen to be believed. From David Beckham to Zinedine Zidane, and Paolo Maldini to Roberto Carlos, match-worn and signed jerseys by the game’s greats are plentiful, as well as so much more.
Fans of Zidane can own a piece of memorabilia from the retired Frenchman’s most infamous match; the shirt he wore in the 2006 World Cup final, when he was dismissed from the field of play for headbutting Italian defender Marco Materazzi. In his absence, France lost the game and Italy lifted the cup. It was to be Zidane’s final game.
Official medals from major tournaments also feature strongly in an auction of several hundred lots. Quite simply, it’s an opportunity that shouldn’t be missed.
This auction has special significance for our founder Marc Sonnenthal. Originally from London, and now calling Los Angeles home, he will be looking on with keen interest as the auction house from his adopted city puts on a remarkable sale in his home town.
