A guide to LA’s best galleries

LA is a dazzling, star-studded and glamorous city but is, of course, more well-known for its association with the movie industry than its passion for art. However, LA’s galleries are some of its best-kept secrets, housing impressive collections of internationally acclaimed modern and fine art, as well as local artisan pieces, photography, and sculpture. We run through some of our favorite LA galleries:

1. LA Louver

The LA Louver is one of LA’s most prestigious art galleries. It has hosted exhibitions of the works of high-profile and world-renowned artists including Ed Moses, Marcel Duchamp, and David Hockney. It was established in 1976 and has since built a solid reputation for displaying a finely tuned balance of big names and emerging talent.

2. Honor Fraser Gallery

Honor Fraser was a British model who became an art dealer and then eventually opened his own gallery. The Honor Fraser Gallery was opened in 2006 and is home to exhibits by both local artists and international names, aiming to display a combination of both well-known artists and up-and-coming talent.

3. Susanne Vielmetter Gallery

This gallery in LA is Susanne Vielmetter’s first exhibition space, but she followed it up with a second gallery in Berlin. She is known for her immersive exhibitions, showcasing contemporary works such as projected movies and abstract installations as well as using the more traditional gallery methods.

4. A
CME

ACME was founded by Randy Sommer and Robert Gunderman and has been open to the public since 1994. It is a contemporary art gallery but exhibits a wide range of different mediums, regularly displaying sketches, paintings, sculpture and video installations.

5. Kohn Gallery

The Michael Kohn gallery was established in 1985. It is known for playing host to museum-standard exhibits showcasing the life and work of world-class artists such as Andy Warhol and Jay Defeo.

6. Good Luck Gallery

Chinatown’s Good Luck Gallery is the only artistic establishment in LA which focuses on works by artists who have been self-taught. Rather than looking at the biggest names in contemporary and fine art, the Good Luck Gallery showcases those who create because they really want to, not because they are in search of success or recognition. The exhibitions are always unique and offer a window into the world of Folk Art and unusual methodology.

7. Art Share LA

Art Share LA was relaunched in 2013 with a new look, but it continues to offer the same public events and creative services that it has done since 1997. There are regular exhibitions of artists’ work as well as creative spaces available for artists who need a place to work on their pieces. Their Thursday evening jazz jam sessions are a favorite with musical locals!

8. MOCA

The Museum of Contemporary Art is perhaps LA’s most revered artistic institution. In addition to the many permanent and temporary exhibitions, MOCA also puts on workshops and lectures, screens independent movies and holds public readings. It describes itself as a museum rather than a gallery, but one which is constantly adapting itself in order to reflect the ever-changing state of the contemporary art world. The museum is home to more than 7,000 individual pieces of art and offers a huge amount to see under one roof.

9. 1003 Art Gallery

The 1003 Art Gallery & Lounge is a brand-new player in LA’s art scene. It opened its doors in April 2016 and has since held a wide variety of different events and exhibits for art lovers. Its location in the heart of Venice makes it a favorite with old-hands on the LA art scene, who once lived and worked in the area but have had to leave due to the dramatic increase in rental prices.
